The town is located close to Hungary’s western border, at the feet of the Alps, 60 kilometers from Vienna and Bratislava and 220 kilometers from Budapest. In antique times, Sopron (Scarbantia) was an important link between Rome and the areas near the Northern Sea. Its exceptional economic importance was the result of its favorable geographic position, commerce and high-level craftsmanship and winemaking. The town unifies past and present in itself by creating a bridge between the country and our western neighbors and opens a gate for both foreign and domestic visitors as it is described in the crest of the town.
The residents of the town are well-known for their hospitality and for their loyalty to the town. This is represented by the Loyalty Gate, which is located on the southern side of the Firetower. This monument recalls the memory of the referendum in 1921.
According to data from the Central Statistical Agency, the number of residents living in Sopron is 55.743. Taking into account the population (93.064) of the close area around Sopron, the town defines the life of nearly 150.000 people.
